Belgrade explores smart city technology implementation

Belgrade is exploring the implementation of a smart city system to modernize municipal services and improve urban management through information and communication technologies. The project, initiated by a 2021 decision from the City Assembly, is being implemented by the public utility company Infostan Tehnologije.

Proposed technologies include traffic lights that adapt to congestion, sensors to monitor air quality and noise levels, and smart street lighting that responds to pedestrian movement. The system aims to facilitate better resource management, faster decision-making, and increased citizen participation in urban governance.

Experts note that while smart cities can enhance quality of life, they also present risks regarding surveillance. Dušan Smiljanić from the Faculty of Security in Belgrade warns that while some nations use these tools for efficiency, authoritarian regimes may misuse the collected data for increased monitoring.
