Belgrade GSP faces potential collapse due to massive debts
The Belgrade Public Transport Company (GSP) is facing a critical financial crisis that threatens to halt the supply of electricity, gas, and fuel. According to the ‘Centar’ union, the company has received notices that gas supplies for buses will be suspended on November 4 due to debts totaling 600 million dinars owed to companies ‘Bedem’ and ‘Cryo gas’. Additionally, diesel fuel debts have reached nearly 900 million dinars.
Elektroprivrede Srbije has issued a final warning regarding the suspension of electricity services. This potential shutdown would affect business buildings, transport depots, and the trolleybus and tram power systems. The union also noted that private maintenance companies, including DAT Holding, MPN Promet, and SDT Group, are owed hundreds of millions of dinars.
Union president Ivan Banković stated that the situation is beyond the company’s control and is a result of unpaid funds from the Belgrade city budget. He warned that GSP may be forced to reduce the number of vehicles in service or face the freezing of its accounts. The union has called on Belgrade Mayor Aleksandar Šapić to provide an immediate solution to prevent a collapse of the transit system used by nearly one million citizens.
