Belgrade homicides spark scrutiny of police and courts

In May 2022, Aleksandar Nešović was shot dead in the restaurant “27” on Senjak. The investigation has been marked by alleged procedural irregularities: police chief Veselin Milić was initially charged then removed from the case, prosecutors sought to interview suspect Saša Vuković without guard supervision, and senior prosecutor Nenad Stefanović requested the prison guard be taken away, involving Justice Minister Nenad Vujić. Authorities insist the actions complied with the criminal procedure law.

In September 2005, Aleksandar Vujanović, a tax‑authority employee and quiz champion, was found stabbed more than twenty times in his locked flat on Ustanička Street, Belgrade. The apartment showed no signs of robbery, and police noted that the locked‑room scene suggested the assailant was known to the victim. The investigation focused on acquaintances who could have entered and exited the apartment.
