Balkan region marks death of Ratko Mladić and Dušan Jovanović anniversary

Several significant events and commemorations are occurring in the Balkan region. Ratko Mladić, the convicted war criminal and former commander of the Army of Republika Srpska, has passed away while serving a life sentence for genocide and crimes against humanity, including the 1995 Srebrenica massacre.

In Belgrade, activists and the family of Dušan Jovanović are marking the 29th anniversary of the 13-year-old Roma boy's murder. The victim was killed by neo-Nazis in 1997, an event that remains a symbol of anti-Roma racism and discrimination in Serbia. The Romani Cultural Center of Serbia has proposed October 18 as a day of collective remembrance for the Roma community.

Additionally, religious observances are taking place for Srđevdan, a holiday dedicated to Saints Sergius and Bacchus. The feast carries historical significance in the region, particularly regarding the legacy of early Christian martyrs and medieval religious traditions.
