Belgrade marks 82nd anniversary of liberation from Nazi occupation

Belgrade is commemorating the 82nd anniversary of its liberation from German occupation, which occurred on October 20, 1944. The Belgrade Operation was a joint effort by the Yugoslav National Liberation Army (NOVJ) and the Soviet Red Army, following an agreement between Josip Broz Tito and Joseph Stalin.

The liberation ended three and a half years of occupation. Historical records indicate that the intense fighting resulted in the deaths of approximately 2,944 NOVJ members and 960 Red Army soldiers. German forces suffered around 15,000 fatalities and 9,000 captures during the operation.

Official ceremonies were held at the Cemetery of the Liberators of Belgrade. The events were attended by Serbian government officials, including Minister Milica Đurđević Stamenkovski and Belgrade Assembly President Nikola Nikodijević, alongside diplomatic representatives from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Armenia.
