Belgrade Police Chief Arrested After Body Discovered in Inđija Barrel

Serbian prosecutors announced that a barrel excavated in the municipality of Inđija contained the remains of a man believed to be the missing victim, identified as A.N., of a shooting at the “27” restaurant in Belgrade’s Senjak district. The investigation, overseen by the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade, involves ten suspects, including four police officers, and has led to the arrest of Veselin Milić, the former head of the Belgrade Police. Milić was taken into custody on 15 May and ordered to serve a 30‑day detention period.

Authorities have seized dozens of mobile phones, computers, hard drives and vehicles as evidence, and DNA and autopsy examinations are pending at the Institute for Forensic Medicine. President Aleksandar Vučić described the case as “extremely serious” for the state and pledged new legislation and sanctions against police and military officials who protect criminal groups. The scandal is prompting calls from opposition parties for resignations of the interior minister and the police director, highlighting deep concerns about corruption and organized crime within Serbia’s security apparatus.
