Belgrade prosecutors close investigation into alleged use of LRAD devices at protests

The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade has concluded its investigation into the alleged use of LRAD acoustic devices, or ‘sound cannons,’ against protesters during a student demonstration on March 15. The prosecution stated that after analyzing medical records, video footage, and data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Defense, it found no evidence that such sonic weapons were utilized.

Novica Antić, former president of the Military Union of Serbia, has criticized the Ministry of Internal Affairs for classifying information regarding the number, models, and locations of these devices as ‘strictly confidential.’ Antić argues that such classification is an unlawful attempt to shield officials from criminal responsibility, noting that LRAD devices are not recognized as authorized means of coercion under the Law on Police.

Legal experts, including attorney Vladimir Terzić, have responded to the prosecutor's decision by urging citizens to preserve all documentation and evidence of injuries. While the current investigation has been halted, lawyers suggest that the emergence of new facts or evidence could allow for the reopening of the case before the statute of limitations expires.
