Belgrade Prosecutor's Office announces increased election duties

The Higher Public Prosecutor's Office (VJT) in Belgrade has announced increased 24-hour shifts for prosecutors from October 25 to November 5, 2026. These measures involve two to three prosecutors from the Higher Prosecutor's Office and all six basic prosecutor's offices within its jurisdiction working continuously to respond to reports regarding electoral rights, public order, and violent behavior.

The VJT issued a sharp rebuttal to claims made by Appellate Court Judge Miodrag Majić during the television program ‘Utisak nedelje’. Majić had alleged that ‘special duties’ were being organized and suggested that prosecutors close to Chief Prosecutor Nenad Stefanović would handle potential unrest. The VJT denied these claims, stating that all legal states prepare for elections within their statutory mandates.

The prosecutor's office further characterized Majić's comments as inappropriate and insulting toward judicial colleagues, stating they expect an urgent response from the High Judicial Council and the High Prosecutorial Council. Additionally, the VJT appealed to citizens to refrain from violence, attacks on property, or disruptions to state institutions and police services during and after the election period.
