Belize explores US security cooperation to combat cartel threats

Belizean Prime Minister John Briceño is evaluating participation in the United States’ ‘Shield of the Americas’ security initiative to combat international drug trafficking organizations. The initiative, launched by US President Donald Trump, aims to strengthen regional cooperation through intelligence sharing, law enforcement coordination, and potential military cooperation.

To determine the practicality of this cooperation, senior Belizean security officials—including the BDF Commandant, the Coast Guard Admiral, and the CEO for National Security—will meet with US counterparts. While the government seeks improved equipment, intelligence, and specialized training, the Prime Minister has not yet committed to allowing foreign troops to operate on Belizean territory, stating that technical discussions must occur first.

Concurrently, Michel Chebat has assumed leadership of the Ministry of National Security, overseeing Home Affairs and National Defense. Chebat has identified citizen security and border protection as his primary priorities, noting recent incidents in the Sarstoon region. He is currently assessing the gaps and processes within the Belize Defence Force, the Coast Guard, and the Police Department.
