Belize bus operators threaten nationwide service shutdown

The Belize Bus Association (BBA) has threatened to suspend all bus services starting Monday, August 24, if the government does not reach an agreement regarding diesel subsidies. BBA President Philip Jones stated that operators have continued to run services since the subsidy expired on August 4, despite rising costs for fuel, tires, and parts. The association is requesting that the subsidy be reinstated retroactively to alleviate the financial burden on the industry.

Transport Minister Dr. Louis Zabaneh expressed surprise at the shutdown threat, noting that he believed the association would allow the Cabinet more time to analyze the request. He indicated that the Prime Minister, acting as Minister of Finance, requested a formal analysis to be presented at the following Cabinet meeting.

Chester Williams, CEO of the Ministry of Transport, stated that the final decision regarding the reinstatement of the diesel subsidy rests with the Cabinet. While the BBA has announced its intention to stop service, it has expressed a willingness to meet with government officials immediately to find a solution.
