Belize celebrates 45 years of independence
Belize is celebrating its 45th anniversary of independence from the United Kingdom, marking the culmination of the month-long September Celebrations. The anniversary commemorates the nation's transition from the British colony of British Honduras on September 21, 1981.
Events across the country include parades in Belize City, Belmopan, and Orange Walk, alongside official ceremonies and cultural activities. This year’s theme, ‘Look At Me: I Am Belize @ 45’, focuses on the Belizean people. Prime Minister John Briceño encouraged citizens to reflect on the nation's progress and to ‘believe boldly in how far we can go’.
The celebrations have drawn international attention, including congratulations from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and a commemoration at Westminster Abbey in London. Additionally, the Belize Defence Force hosted military representatives from Barbados, Honduras, Jamaica, and Canada for the festivities.
