Belize City police investigate fatal highway pedestrian accident

Police are investigating a fatal traffic accident on the Philip Goldson Highway in Belize City that killed 77-year-old retiree Erlene Elizabeth Gillett. The incident occurred on Thursday morning near Enrique Martinez and Sons Limited.

According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Stacy Smith, Gillett was struck by a Dodge Caravan while attempting to cross the highway. Investigators have impounded the vehicle and obtained a urine sample from the male driver, who has been served a notice of intended prosecution.

ASP Smith noted that this is the second recent incident involving a pedestrian being struck while attempting to cross this specific stretch of highway. While she urged pedestrians to use designated crossing paths, she emphasized that drivers have a duty to remain alert, particularly as the incident occurred within city limits.
