Belize Council of Churches calls for modesty at Carnival

The Belize Council of Churches has issued a call for increased modesty and public decency during Carnival celebrations. While the Council expressed support for Carnival as a vital part of Belizean culture and national identity, leaders voiced concerns regarding “immodest attire and conduct” observed in recent years.

Church leaders are urging Carnival organizers to implement and enforce clearer costume guidelines, particularly to protect minors. The Council has suggested that vibrant celebration and standards of decency can coexist and has offered to engage in dialogue with government agencies, cultural organizations, and organizers to find a balance.

Further complicating the debate is a proposal to separate junior participants from adult revelers. Church Senator Louis Wade argued that even if children wear different costumes, they remain exposed to adult behavior and imagery within the same public spaces. Wade called on the Ministry of Culture and the government to take recommendations seriously to ensure children are not exposed to inappropriate examples during the festivities.
