Belize declares state of emergency amid rising gang violence

A state of emergency has been declared for Southside Belize City and parts of the Belize and Cayo Districts following a week of deadly violence. The measure follows a brutal attack on the Coastal Highway near Mile 30, where gunmen opened fire on a vehicle, resulting in multiple casualties.

Commissioner of Police Dr. Richard Rosado announced that approximately 60 individuals have been identified through intelligence and investigations for possible detention under the emergency measures. While not all have been detained, police are using these extraordinary powers to disrupt coordinated retaliatory gang violence that has moved beyond Belize City into surrounding areas.

The declaration, effective under Statutory Instrument No. 130 of 2026, covers designated sections of Belize City, Ladyville, Cotton Tree, and Unitedville. Opposition Leader Tracy Panton has criticized the government for failing to provide effective security solutions, questioning the efficacy of mediation talks between officials and gang leaders while shootings continue.
