Belize denies claims of deporting Cuban medical workers

Belizean Health and Wellness Minister Kevin Bernard has denied allegations that Cuban healthcare professionals are being quietly deported or sent home. The claims surfaced following a social media video showing Cuban nationals at an airport with luggage, leading to speculation regarding the future of the Cuban Medical Brigade in the country.

Minister Bernard dismissed these suggestions as ‘irresponsible,’ explaining that the individuals in the video were traveling home for scheduled vacations. He noted that medical personnel take leave at different times throughout the year and that it is common for them to transport personal items to their families when traveling to Cuba. He emphasized that these workers remain active members of the national healthcare system.

The controversy occurs amid ongoing discussions regarding the future of the medical cooperation program between Belize and Cuba. While the United States has increased pressure on nations hosting Cuban medical missions—alleging exploitative labor practices—Belize and other Caribbean governments have defended the program. Belizean officials maintain that Cuban professionals are employed and paid directly through the government payroll system and are currently engaged in diplomatic talks to resolve the program's future.
