Belize economy grows 5.1% amid sectoral challenges
Belize's economy grew by 5.1% year-on-year, according to recent data cited by Prime Minister John Briceño during his State of the Nation address. The government reported a record employment rate of 98% and highlighted significant investment activity. For the 2025-2026 fiscal year, BELTRAIDE's BelizeINVEST unit facilitated 13 approved projects totaling over $255 million, expected to create more than 900 jobs.
The government plans to allocate $324 million in capital investments this fiscal year toward infrastructure, healthcare, education, and security. Additionally, seven pending investments valued at over $900 million are under consideration.
Despite these macroeconomic indicators, the Prime Minister acknowledged significant sectoral challenges. The sugar industry faces a potential production drop of nearly half compared to three years ago due to fusarium disease and cochinillas. In response, the government has allocated $8 million to combat these issues. The tourism sector is also experiencing difficulties caused by a recent decline in visitor arrivals and the presence of sargassum seaweed.
While official figures suggest economic strength, observers note a disconnect for many households facing rising costs for food, transportation, and daily necessities, raising questions about whether high employment rates are translating into financial security for the average citizen.
