Belize Electricity Limited addresses rising consumer billing complaints
Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) is addressing rising consumer complaints regarding sharp increases in electricity bills. Executive Chairman Lynn Young stated that while employees have occasionally misread meters, the company corrects these errors when identified. Young denied allegations of systematic overcharging, arguing that the computerized billing system would be extremely difficult to manipulate to target specific customers.
Regarding the rollout of new electronic meters, which BEL aims to complete for all customers by 2028, Young maintained that the devices provide more accurate readings rather than higher costs.
Investigations into formal complaints have identified several factors contributing to higher charges, including increased electricity consumption, longer billing periods, and adjustments following estimated readings. Other factors cited include the use of high-energy appliances like air conditioning during warmer months and accumulated arrears that customers may have been unaware of. In some cases, a jump in billing occurred when transitioning from an inaccurately read old meter to a new one that captured the correct cumulative usage.
