Belize Electricity Limited explores solar to address supply shortages
Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) is accelerating efforts to integrate solar power to mitigate electricity supply shortfalls and reduce reliance on expensive diesel generation. Executive Chairman Lynn Young stated that several smaller solar projects could save the company between $27 million and $28 million annually.
Currently, BEL faces challenges including reduced hydroelectric production and uncertainty regarding electricity imports from Mexico. While diesel generation costs are estimated between 75 and 100 Belize cents per kilowatt-hour, solar-generated electricity is expected to cost approximately 13 cents per kilowatt-hour.
To address demand during evening peaks when solar is unavailable, BEL emphasized that battery storage is essential. The company has received approval for two solar projects and is seeking a third, with one potentially supplying electricity by late December. However, larger solar and battery initiatives are not expected until around 2028 due to potential supply-chain constraints and infrastructure complexities.
