Belize Electricity Limited implements rate increase amid consumer protests

Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has implemented a new Cost of Power Adjustment mechanism, increasing electricity charges by up to 1.5 cents per kilowatt-hour. The company stated the adjustment is necessary to cover the rising costs of purchasing power and to maintain financial stability for the nation's energy security.

Consumers have expressed significant frustration on social media, reporting sharp increases in their bills despite no change in electricity usage. Some customers have questioned the accuracy of the charges, noting that bills remain high even when residences are unoccupied.

Prime Minister John Briceño addressed the situation, describing it as a crisis. He explained that BEL has been selling energy to the public at a loss, sometimes purchasing power for as much as $1.00 USD per kilowatt while selling it for approximately 42 to 44 cents. The government is currently working with engineers and the Ministry of Energy to bring more energy companies online, with the goal of increasing local production within six months to a year to reduce costs.
