Belize focuses on human capital and youth-led development

The World Bank Group’s Human Capital Report 2026 suggests that human capital in Belize is shaped by factors beyond the classroom, including home environments, neighborhoods, and workplace opportunities. The report argues that human capital—the accumulated health, knowledge, and skills of a population—is formed continuously throughout a person's life, necessitating a broader approach to diagnosing poverty and economic development.

In a related movement toward national development, students at the fifth annual Belize Creative Youth Ideas Summit recently proposed solutions to the country’s most pressing issues. Participants addressed challenges such as crime, healthcare, climate change, and economic development. Proposed ideas included making healthy food more affordable, expanding youth community centers, and integrating responsible AI use into the school curriculum as the nation approaches its fiftieth anniversary of independence in 2031.
