Belize introduces six new lactation counsellors to support breastfeeding
Belize has introduced six newly certified lactation counsellors to provide enhanced breastfeeding support for mothers and families across the country. The counsellors completed an intensive six-month training program designed to assist mothers in overcoming breastfeeding challenges and promoting infant health.
Minister of Health and Wellness Kevin Bernard stated that the initiative aligns with the ministry’s 2024 Breastfeeding Policy, which aims to strengthen education and practical guidance for families. The training program received support from UNICEF, which funded the instruction for four of the six new counsellors. Representatives from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and UNICEF emphasized the importance of breastfeeding as optimal nutrition for newborn growth and disease protection.
