Belize promotes investment opportunities amid climate concerns

A Belizean delegation led by the Belize Trade and Investment Development Service (BELTRAIDE) is participating in the Caribbean Investment Forum in Barbados to promote national investment opportunities. Supported by the International Labour Organization’s PROSPER project, the delegation is highlighting sectors such as cacao agroforestry and sustainable tourism, with a specific focus on economic development in the Toledo and Stann Creek Districts.

While the government actively seeks to attract capital and expand production, the 2026 U.S. State Department Investment Climate Statement on Belize highlights significant systemic challenges. The report notes concerns regarding political influence in the distribution of licenses and government contracts, inadequate enforcement of financial disclosure requirements, and gaps in procurement safeguards.

Investors have reported issues including bureaucratic delays, inconsistent regulatory implementation, insecure land titles, and insufficient transparency in dispute resolution. Additionally, high energy and logistics costs, alongside infrastructure and workforce constraints, continue to impact the country’s overall competitiveness.
