Belize Public Service Union calls for social assistance reform
The Public Service Union (PSU) of Belize is advocating for the transition from discretionary ministerial allowances to institutionalized social assistance programs. The union argues that the current system, where elected officials provide financial aid for medical expenses, funerals, and other emergencies, lacks transparency, published eligibility criteria, and formal appeal mechanisms.
PSU representatives contend that the existing arrangement risks political patronage, as assistance may depend on personal connections rather than demonstrated need. They propose channeling these resources into established public programs to ensure fairness and accountability.
Prime Minister John Briceño defended the use of constituency development funds, stating that these allowances allow Area Representatives to make immediate decisions to serve their constituents effectively. He rejected claims of political clientelism, asserting that the funds are used to address urgent community needs, such as infrastructure repairs or individual hardships, more efficiently than traditional ministry channels.
