Belize strengthens Taiwan ties amid Guatemala airspace dispute
Belize and Taiwan have signed new cooperation agreements to strengthen bilateral ties. During an official visit by Taiwanese Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung, officials signed a Bilateral Cooperation Agreement for the Training of Diplomatic Personnel. Additionally, the University of Belize and TaiwanICDF signed a letter of intent to establish a Taiwan-Caribbean Institute to promote academic cooperation and knowledge exchange in the region.
Separately, tensions have risen between Belize and Guatemala following an incident where a Guatemalan military aircraft entered Belizean airspace. While Belize’s Ministry of Defence labeled the event a violation, Guatemala denied the incident occurred during the UN General Assembly. Opposition Leader Tracy Panton has criticized the government’s diplomatic strategy, questioning the consistency of the administration's response to what she described as aggression and intimidation.
