Belize Telemedia's Planned Purchase of Speednet Draws Regulatory and Political Opposition
The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) of Belize announced it will conduct a formal, impartial review of Belize Telemedia Limited’s (BTL) proposed acquisition of Speednet Communications Limited (SMART), citing obligations under the Telecommunications Act to assess consumer protection, service continuity, market fairness and other statutory criteria. BTL’s board has approved the purchase pending due‑diligence and a definitive share purchase agreement.
The opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has publicly warned against a rushed deal, demanding greater transparency, due‑diligence and public consultation. UDP leader Tracy Panton argued the transaction could create a monopoly, conflict of interest and undermine consumer rights, urging the government to respect civil‑society partners and the Belizean public.
