Belize tourism faces seasonal slowdown in San Pedro

Tourism in San Pedro, Belize, has experienced a recent slowdown, with Minister of Tourism Anthony Mahler confirming a decline in overnight arrivals between June and August. June saw a 5 percent decrease compared to the previous year, and August was noted as being particularly soft following five months of growth.

Local businesses on Ambergris Caye, including beachfront restaurants and downtown shops, are reporting lower sales and some temporary closures. To combat the low season, the government is focusing on expanding air connectivity. Six new flight services are scheduled, including nonstop routes from BermudAir connecting Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Raleigh-Durham, and Boston. United Airlines is also expected to increase service from San Francisco, Chicago, and Denver.

The Ministry is also working to secure a direct flight from Europe and is promoting sports tourism as a strategy to attract visitors during slower months. Mahler emphasized the need for improved facilities to host more sporting events to bolster the economy during the off-peak period.
