Belizean business and labor groups decline Cabinet talks on BTL-Speednet deal

The proposed acquisition of Speednet Limited by BTL has sparked significant national debate in Belize, leading to friction between the government and major social partners. The Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) and the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) have declined invitations from the Cabinet to discuss the transaction.

The BCCI and NTUCB stated they would only participate if the National Evangelical Association of Belize and the Belize Network of NGOs were also included, and if requested information was provided with sufficient time for review. Prime Minister John Briceño noted that the Cabinet specifically invited these two organizations as the primary representatives of the business and labor sectors to address their opposition to the deal.

Meanwhile, Devin Daly, a junior minister of state and Area Representative for Collet, indicated he lacks specific insight into the deal. Daly stated he was not part of the Cabinet discussions regarding the acquisition and does not hold a seat on the BTL board, noting that the country requires more information before a firm judgment can be made.
