Bell Bay industrial center sees new energy and manufacturing proposals

Tasmania's Bell Bay industrial center is seeing new developments in the renewable energy and manufacturing sectors. PolarBlue, a Perth-based company, has proposed a $1.5 billion manufacturing hub focused on 3D printing fiberglass-based floating wind turbines and low-emissions fuels. The company has signed an initial agreement with the state regarding marine access and job training, claiming the project could create 150 jobs in its first phase.

Simultaneously, the company Firmus is facing scrutiny regarding its proposed AI factory in Bell Bay. Firmus has appealed conditions set by the George Town Council regarding the use of diesel generators. While the council approved their use during emergencies and testing, Firmus is seeking to use generators to augment the mains electricity supply. This has raised questions from local representatives regarding the consistency of such energy use with Tasmania’s climate and emission reduction policies. Hydro Tasmania is currently evaluating whether to supply approximately 30% of the state's energy to Firmus's three proposed AI factories.
