Belleville police officer and suspect injured in synagogue shooting
A police officer and a suspect were injured in an exchange of gunfire near the Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, on Sunday evening. The incident occurred around 7:10 p.m. while members of the Jewish community were gathered for Yom Kippur services.
According to the Belleville Police Service, an officer encountered an individual in the vicinity of Bleecker Avenue and Victoria Avenue, leading to the shooting. Both the officer and the individual were transported to local hospitals; reports indicate the suspect is in critical condition. While shots were reportedly fired through synagogue windows, the Sons of Jacob Congregation confirmed that no worshippers inside the building were injured.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressed his disgust over the shooting, stating that the Jewish community has the right to worship safely and without fear. He called for the full prosecution of those responsible. The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has been notified to investigate the incident. In response to the event, York Regional Police announced they will increase visible patrols at places of worship to ensure community safety.
