Bells Line of Road to undergo $100m safety overhaul

More than 200 community submissions are shaping a $100 million safety overhaul on the Bells Line of Road. According to a consultation summary report by Transport for NSW (TfNSW), 84.7 per cent of respondents supported a shortlist of proposed upgrades intended to address issues such as blind crests, speeding, and heavy freight traffic.

Due to difficult mountain terrain and environmental constraints, major structural changes like dual carriageways or bridge widenings have been ruled out. Instead, TfNSW will prioritize practical improvements, including safer intersections with dedicated turning lanes and wider shoulders, as well as the construction of two new heavy-vehicle rest areas to support freight operators.

The project follows increased pressure on the scenic corridor, which serves as one of only two major highway routes crossing the Blue Mountains, particularly following the temporary closure of Victoria Pass.
