Bellvitge Hospital study finds atogepant cuts migraine attacks in refractory patients
A multicenter Spanish study coordinated by the Headache Unit of Hospital Universitario de Bellvitge and IDIBELL evaluated atogepant in 252 patients with migraine that had not responded to advanced preventive therapies, including CGRP‑targeting monoclonal antibodies. After three months, about 30 % of participants achieved at least a 50 % reduction in migraine days, and 44 % reported a clinically relevant improvement. The trial, involving 17 hospitals across Spain, is the first to provide real‑world data on atogepant’s efficacy in this difficult‑to‑treat population, showing reductions in pain intensity and a lower need for acute medication.
These findings expand therapeutic options for chronic and refractory migraine, a leading cause of disability affecting roughly 12 % of the Spanish population, and may help clinicians personalize treatment strategies for patients who have exhausted existing preventive options.
