Belém implements successful Dengue control model

Belém, Brazil, has gained international recognition for its successful efforts to combat Dengue fever. Following a significant outbreak in 2024, the city reported a 70.4% reduction in cases, with registered instances dropping from 2,997 in 2024 to 886 in 2025.

Bill Gates highlighted the city's progress on LinkedIn by sharing a New York Times report detailing Belém's response to the Aedes aegypti mosquito. The city's strategy combined epidemiological surveillance, health agent intervention, community participation, and new technologies. A key component of this effort is the installation of Larvicide Dissemination Stations (EDLs), with over 5,000 units already deployed and a goal to reach 8,000 by the end of 2026.

The New York Times noted that Belém's mobilization could provide practical lessons for cities in the United States, which face an increasing risk of Dengue transmission.
