Belém orders removal of faulty asphalt on Avenida Nazaré

The City Hall of Belém has ordered the removal of newly applied asphalt on Avenida Nazaré after the paving was found to be improperly leveled. The error resulted in the road surface being higher than the sidewalks in several sections of the three-kilometer stretch between Avenida Assis de Vasconcelos and Avenida Alcindo Cacela.

This height discrepancy creates significant accessibility barriers for pedestrians, particularly the elderly, people with disabilities, and those using strollers. Local residents expressed concerns that the uneven surfaces could lead to accidents, especially given the proximity to the Círio de Nazaré, a major religious event that brings large crowds to the area.

Mayor Igor Normando stated that the city will not accept the faulty work, noting, “I have no commitment to error.” The municipal government has notified the responsible company, which must rectify the issue at no additional cost to the public treasury.
