Círio de Nazaré attracts 2.3 million pilgrims to Belém

The 234th edition of Círio de Nazaré in Belém, Pará, drew an estimated 2.3 million participants for the massive religious procession. Recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the event is one of the largest Marian pilgrimages in the world.

The main procession followed a 3.6-kilometer route from the Cathedral Metropolitana to the Basilica Sanctuary. The ceremony included the traditional carrying of the 'Berlinda'—a decorated platform bearing the image of Our Lady of Nazareth. Key moments during the festivities included the 'Trasladação' night procession, which saw over 2 million people, and the main Sunday march led by Archbishop Dom Júlio Endi Akamine.

Despite the large crowds, the event faced some logistical challenges, including the premature cutting of the ceremonial rope and a vehicle fire near the Cathedral during the Trasladação. Beyond its religious significance, the Círio is a major cultural and economic driver for the Amazon region, showcasing local traditions such as 'miriti' crafts and regional cuisine like 'pato no tucupi' and 'maniçoba'.
