Belmont Mineração seeks to expand Itabira mine
Belmont Mineração Ltda. is seeking approval to expand the Oliveira Castro – Esmeralda mine in Itabira. The proposal, which includes both open-pit and underground mining activities, aims to significantly increase production capacities. Specifically, raw ore production is projected to rise from 78,000 to 100,000 tons per year, while underground production could increase from 11,000 m³ to 90,000 m³ annually. The Ore Treatment Unit capacity is also expected to grow from 111,000 to 411,000 tons per year.
As part of the expansion request, the company has proposed environmental compensation measures. This includes a commitment to pay R$ 630,000 toward the revitalization of the Água Santa Municipal Natural Park, bringing the total contribution to R$ 900,000. The Municipal Council for Environmental Defense (Codema) is scheduled to analyze the request for land use and occupation certification.
