Belo Horizonte establishes RNA research center for malaria vaccine
A new research center, the Embrapii Competence Center in RNA Therapies and Vaccines (CTV-RNA), has been established at the Belo Horizonte Technology Park (BH-TEC). The facility is dedicated to developing vaccines and therapies using messenger RNA (mRNA) technology.
The center's primary objective is to produce an original vaccine targeting Plasmodium vivax, the protozoan responsible for the majority of malaria cases in Brazil. This differs from existing global vaccines that primarily target Plasmodium falciparum, which is more prevalent in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The project involves a partnership between the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), Embrapii, BH-TEC, and various public health and economic development institutions. The initiative is slated to receive R$ 60 million in investment over a four-year period. Beyond malaria, the center intends to develop cancer therapies and other RNA-based treatments.
