Belo Horizonte official fines and compels man to clean graffiti

Authorities in Belo Horizonte have identified and penalized an individual responsible for vandalizing a recently renovated underpass in the Horto neighborhood. The perpetrator, identified by the tag ‘gordin 33’, was located through cooperation between the Municipal Civil Guard and the Civil Police of Minas Gerais.

Belo Horizonte Mayor Álvaro Damião announced that the individual was issued a R$ 2,000 fine and was required to personally clean the graffiti from the wall. The mayor used the incident to distinguish between illegal vandalism and authorized street art, stating that while the city supports graffiti artists, it will strictly penalize those who deface public property.

Recent legislative changes in the city have increased penalties for such infractions. For property that is not a protected monument, fines now range between R$ 2,000 and R$ 5,000.
