Cemig customers face widespread power outages in Minas Gerais

Severe storms in Minas Gerais have caused significant power outages, affecting approximately 600,000 Cemig customers, which represents about 6% of the company’s consumer units in the state. The weather event is described by the utility as one of the most severe in its 74-year history.

In Belo Horizonte, the storm caused flooding, road obstructions, and power interruptions. Specifically, the shutdown of the Ouro Preto-Taquaril distribution line affected 89,000 consumer units. The storm also impacted the water supply in Itabira, as power failures at the Gatos Water Treatment Station threatened local service.

Wind gusts reached up to 150 km/h in the southern region of the state. The storm caused fallen trees, roof damage, and flooding across various municipalities. Cemig has mobilized between 3,000 and 4,000 workers to restore electricity. While the storms affected 349 polling stations, election officials noted that electronic voting machines remained operational as they run on batteries.
