Belo Horizonte: Two women rescued from domestic slavery

Two elderly women, aged 65 and 90, were rescued from conditions analogous to domestic slavery in a high-end neighborhood in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Following anonymous reports, a joint operation involving the Regional Superintendency of Labor in Minas Gerais, the Ministry of Labor and Employment, and the Federal Police identified the exploitation.

The investigation revealed that the 90-year-old woman had been working for the same family for approximately 75 years, while the 65-year-old had been in the same situation for about 60 years. Their routine included cleaning, meal preparation, and grocery shopping, often including Sundays, without regular wages or access to labor rights. Authorities also noted restrictions on their social lives, education, and independence.

Carlos Calazans, the regional superintendent of labor in Minas Gerais, stated that the priority is providing medical, psychological, and social assistance. Efforts are underway with the Belo Horizonte City Hall to place the women in elderly care shelters. Legal proceedings are being prepared to ensure the victims receive appropriate compensation and labor rights.
