The FDA has approved bemotrizinol (BEMT), marking the first new sunscreen active approved for the United States market in over 25 years. The ingredient, marketed by dsm-firmenich as PARSOL® Shield, provides broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection with high photostability.

While bemotrizinol has been used in Europe, Australia, and Asia since 1999, its introduction to the U.S. represents a significant shift in the domestic sun protection market. The filter is noted for its ability to create lightweight, aesthetically pleasing formulations that avoid the white cast often associated with mineral sunscreens.

Australian brand Ultra Violette has already launched the first U.S. product containing the ingredient, Unblock Screen SPF 50. This hybrid formula combines BEMT with octocrylene and zinc oxide. The brand plans to expand its BEMT-based offerings with the launch of Fave Screen SPF 50 in early 2027.
