Ben Affleck reveals Jennifer Garner nearly starred in ‘Animals’

Ben Affleck has revealed that he originally intended to cast his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner, in his upcoming Netflix crime thriller, ‘Animals’. The project, which Affleck is directing and starring in, follows a Los Angeles mayoral candidate whose life is upended by his son's kidnapping.

Affleck noted that casting Garner would have offered logistical benefits for their shared co-parenting schedule and provided an opportunity for her to explore new dramatic territory. However, the decision was ultimately declined to avoid ‘baggage,’ as Garner expressed concerns that their real-life history might distract the audience.

The production faced several shifts, including a temporary hiatus due to competition with Spike Lee’s ‘Highest 2 Lowest’ and the departure of Matt Damon, who was originally slated for the lead role but moved on to film ‘The Odyssey’. Following these changes, Affleck stepped into the lead role, and Kerry Washington was cast as the protagonist's wife. ‘Animals’ is scheduled for release on Netflix on October 9, 2026.
