Ben Affleck's Netflix thriller Animals receives mixed reviews
Ben Affleck’s new Netflix political thriller, ‘Animals’, has premiered to mixed critical reviews. The film, which Affleck also directed and co-wrote, stars him as Mark Kimball, a wealthy attorney and Los Angeles mayoral candidate. The plot centers on a high-stakes kidnapping where Kimball and his wife, Abigail (played by Kerry Washington), must navigate a web of lies and moral dilemmas to secure a $7 million ransom for their son.
Critical reception has been largely negative, with some reviewers describing the film as an ‘insipid’ or ‘uneven’ production that fails to capitalize on its strong ensemble cast, which includes Gillian Anderson, Steven Yeun, Adriana Paz, and Luis Gerardo Méndez. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds low approval ratings from both critics and audiences.
Despite the critical backlash, the film has seen significant viewership on Netflix. While some viewers have searched for real-world connections, the story is a work of fiction, though it shares thematic similarities with the 1959 novel ‘King’s Ransom’ and Akira Kurosawa’s film ‘High and Low’.
