Ben Allen proposes insurance reforms for California

California State Senator Ben Allen, a candidate for California Insurance Commissioner, has outlined a platform to address rising costs for home, auto, and commercial insurance. During a media event in Los Angeles, Allen pledged to accelerate rate reviews, increase market competition by attracting more providers, and strengthen consumer protections.

Allen’s proposals include establishing a new office to attract insurance companies and enhancing enforcement against insurance fraud. He also aims to help residents transition from the California FAIR Plan back to traditional insurance markets by incentivizing fire prevention and disaster mitigation measures. Regarding wildfire claims, Allen emphasized the need for clear scientific standards for smoke and ash damage to ensure residents receive proper compensation.

In opposition to rival Jane Kim’s proposal for a single-payer, government-run insurance program, Allen argued that such a plan could increase premiums and reduce market supply. He also committed to improving language accessibility for immigrant families by expanding services in Chinese and other major languages.
