Ben Amera monolith stands as Africa's largest geological wonder

Ben Amera is a massive granite monolith located in Mauritania, near the border with Western Sahara. Standing at 633 meters tall, it is recognized as the largest monolith in Africa and one of the largest in the world.

The formation rises abruptly from the flat desert sands, creating a visual effect described as an “island in a sea” of sand. Due to its immense scale and isolation, the landmark is visible from many kilometers away.

Accessing the site requires traversing desert dirt tracks, typically via 4x4 vehicles accompanied by local guides. The area also features the Aïcha monolith, which is associated with local legends and an outdoor museum of sculptures.
