Ben Kindel diagnosed with vasovagal episode after medical emergency on team plane
Pittsburgh Penguins forward Ben Kindel is recovering in Pittsburgh after a medical emergency forced the team's charter plane to return to Salt Lake City on Tuesday. The 19-year-old player collapsed approximately 10 minutes after takeoff, prompting an emergency landing at Salt Lake City International Airport.
General Manager Kyle Dubas confirmed during a press conference that Kindel suffered a vasovagal episode, a condition where a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure causes fainting. Kindel was administered oxygen on the aircraft, regained consciousness, and was subsequently transported by ambulance to the University of Utah Hospital for evaluation.
Kindel has since been cleared to travel and has returned to Pittsburgh, where he is undergoing further medical testing. The Penguins have placed him on injured reserve to ensure a cautious recovery. While the team is following strict medical guidelines, Dubas expressed hope that Kindel could return to team practices as early as next week.
