Ben Phiri warns of moral decay in Malawi and promotes reformed development fund
Malawi’s Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ben Phiri, has raised concerns regarding widespread moral decay and corruption within the country. Speaking at an event in Blantyre, Phiri noted that individuals are frequently donating stolen funds to churches without accountability. He called upon religious leaders to reclaim their role as moral anchors to foster integrity and patriotism, citing research that shows Malawians place higher trust in religious and traditional leaders than in elected officials.
In a separate development related to local governance, Phiri also championed the reformed Constituency Development Fund (CDF) during a launch in Thyolo Central. The Integrated Constituency Development Fund (ICDF) model aims to accelerate grassroots development by shifting decision-making power to local councils.
In Thyolo District, K3.6 billion has been allocated for 57 planned projects, including irrigation schemes, road construction, rural electrification, and school infrastructure. Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Chimwemwe Chipungu stated that the reformed fund is a key component of the government’s decentralization agenda, intended to strengthen community ownership and accountability.
