Ben Shelton defeats Carlos Alcaraz in record-breaking US Open quarterfinal
American player Ben Shelton defeated defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a marathon US Open quarterfinal match, winning 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(10-7). The match concluded at 3:33 AM local time, setting a new record for the latest finish in the tournament's history.
Following the match, US Tennis Association (USTA) CEO Craig Tiley addressed criticism regarding the late scheduling of matches at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Despite complaints from fans and players about matches ending well after midnight, Tiley stated that the tournament will maintain its current format of two day and two evening sessions. Tiley argued that the format provides significant value to spectators and noted that match duration cannot be controlled. Instead of changing the schedule, the USTA plans to focus on improving fan comfort by increasing shade, seating, and screen availability at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Shelton will face fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals. In women's singles, Aryna Sabalenka defeated Linda Noskova to remain in contention for her third consecutive US Open title.
