Arthur Fils enters ATP top ten while facing Tokyo qualifying
French tennis player Arthur Fils has reached the ATP top ten for the first time, rising to world number nine. He is the first French player to achieve a top-ten ranking since Gaël Monfils in September 2020.
Despite this milestone, Fils faces a highly unusual situation at the ATP 500 Japan Open in Tokyo. Due to an administrative error where his team missed the registration deadline, he was denied direct entry into the main draw. As a result, the world number nine must compete in the qualifying rounds, making him one of the highest-ranked players to ever do so in the modern era.
The Japan Open features a strong field, including defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz, and Frances Tiafoe. Fils, who won the tournament in 2024, successfully won his first qualifying match against Martin Damm to continue his pursuit of the main draw.
