Ben Stokes retains England Test captaincy after nightclub curfew breach

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) opened an investigation after Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson broke the team's midnight curfew by visiting a London nightclub following England's 115‑run win over New Zealand. A member of England's security staff was struck by a Saracens rugby player during the incident, prompting the ECB to drop both players from the squad for the second Test at The Oval and to place them under disciplinary review.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan argued in a Telegraph column that the breach should not lead to Stokes losing the Test captaincy, stating, “Yes, Ben Stokes broke a curfew. Yes, he made a mistake. But is it a sackable offence as England’s Test captain? I do not think so.” Vaughan cited the precedent of a fine imposed on former white‑ball captain Barry Brook for a similar breach, urging the ECB to be “brave enough and strong enough” to keep Stokes in charge while any sanctions are considered.
