Ben Stokes retirement video prompts ICC probe of ECB compliance

England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) released footage of Ben Stokes announcing his retirement from international cricket during the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge. The video, filmed inside the dressing‑room and broadcast while the match was in progress, was flagged by the International Cricket Council (ICC). In a letter to the ECB, the ICC said the release breached Players' and Match Officials' Areas (PMOA) minimum standards, specifically Article 2.2.11, which prohibits recording equipment and the dissemination of audio or video from protected areas before a match ends.

The ICC reminded the ECB that such footage must not be released until after play concludes and noted that no disciplinary action is expected. Stokes responded to media reports on X with a two‑word post, "Sack him…". England subsequently lost the match by 160 runs, giving New Zealand a 2‑1 series victory. Neither the ECB nor the ICC has issued a public comment beyond the initial correspondence.
